Corn is not just an important animal feed but already an important regenerative and sustainable energy carrier used in Bio-Methane power plants. But besides farmers and energy producers a little unimpressive moth – the so-called corn borer likes corn, too. And it is not just a little butterfly (Ger.: Maiszünsler) but a quite serious pest! The existence of the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) has been restricted to warmer regions in the past, but within the last decade it significantly spreads its existence, and is meanwhile a serious thread even for farmers in Bavaria. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) the overall loss through this problem equals about 4 percent of the worldwide corn harvest or the food requirements of about 60 million people per year. First butterflies usually start to spread out in early June into the new corn fields with a maximum activity in July but may last even into August. Cracked and broken tips of the corn plants are indicating the feed activity of the nymphs. Instead of spraying pesticides we support to suppress the problem in a most ecological way! Using our drone with a sophisticated dispense system mounted to it, we dispose little paper balls including thousands of pre-breed eggs of parasitic wasps from above onto the highly grown crop. The little flies who are developing quickly inside the paper capsules only will be in search of the corn borer’s clutch in order to parasite them – by turning the corn borer eggs into parasitic wasps, too.
Success in depressing the pest however, only is guaranteed, if every field in the area is consequently treated over a few years! Additional information is available (in German language only) here!
We have the technology and offer this service in 2019 for the first time exclusively in cooperation with our partner, Maschinenring Wolfratshausen, who is coordinating the procurement of the parasitic wasps and missions!
