In early August, as the owner and CEO of Videographics Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH I have been delighted to personally deliver the first KLAUPPK system to STRABAG‘s department „Digital Object Scanning and Drones” at their Regensburg (Bavaria) office. STRABAG is a European tech company for construction services with about 73.000 employees worldwide. The decision of this European construction company to purchase PPK system from Australia based KLAU Geomatics Ltd, has been well supported from our technical consultancy and our broad experience in daily KLAUPPK system uses, providing drone surveying services to customers across Germany.
Part of our engagement was supporting a pilot project for STRABAG to demonstrate the KLAUPPK capability in the field, comprising a DJI INSPIRE 2 aircraft, the modified X4s camera and, of course, the KLAU GNSS receiver unit.
Throughout the test area, about 17 hectares in size, STRABAG randomly placed 14 control points and surveyed their coordinates with a high precision RTK-GNSS rover. After the flight, we supplied the images and accordingly the camera location coordinates after they have been computed with the KLAUPPK software utilizing the available VRS-Network, powered by SAPOS and last but not least the calibration data for the camera.
“The results have been very impressive”, said Dr. Thomas Groeninger, the technical head of STRABAG’s department 3D object scanning and drones “The accuracy of the point cloud, the digital elevation model (DEM) and the orthomosaic processed in our systems based on the delivered data set did get very close to the values we measured with our rover. We did not assume that the KLAUPPK system really would work reliably since we have already tested systems with alike accuracy promises from their manufactures but haven’t been able to even get close to the expected results.”
Of course, we and the team at Klau Geomatics have processed the data from this flight about 70 meters above ground on average, using Agisoft PhotoScan, too. The residual errors for all 14 CPs partly were in the sub centimeter area, with a calculated total error of 2.447 cm (RSME), which is well beyond the claim of 3 cm absolute in X/Y/Z!
The order for a KLAUPPK add-on for an existing DJI-Matrice-M210 copter, was placed with us immediately. In addition, we have offered STRABAG to lease our aerial surveying system (Inspire 2-PPK) for an important road construction project. Within two days more than 50 PPK-flights have been conducted. We are very pleased, that we have been able to support STRABAG to bridge the total delivery process of about three weeks and enabled the STRABAG drone operators to get familiar with the most accurate drone surveying system worldwide. In order to make those flights a success, we did help out with remote support and guidance to make this project another important and successful milestone.
In the meantime, Videographics already received additional requests from other STRABAG offices from inside the EU, which Stefan is quite happy about. Looks like our Videographics business concept, a sound combination of consultancy, product sales as well as product and user training starts to pay off.
